Located at the base of Pikes Peak, the picturesque town of Manitou Springs is a popular vacation spot in Colorado. This charming town is home to several attractions, including the famous Manitou Cliff Dwellings and the Garden of the Gods. The surrounding Rocky Mountains provide endless opportunities for exploration.
Many young people who are settling down and starting a family make Manitou Springs their home. The median age in the city is 43, and the average family has 2.7 members. Despite its relatively low population, the city’s livability rating is higher than average. This high livability rating is based on data points about the city’s education, crime, cost of living, and general happiness among residents.
While Manitou Springs is known for its mineral springs, it’s also a thriving destination town with a thriving commercial economy. In addition to the free mineral water, Manitou Springs is home to the U.S. Air Force Academy, NASA’s Space Command, and a wide expanse of prairie for cattle. The city is located in the Rocky Mountains, but is just north of Denver. Its population is 5,461 and continues to grow.
Manitou Springs is also home to the Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the world’s highest cog railway. This historic railway was built in 1889 and was originally made up of six engines. Today, there is only one working engine. The ride is over eight miles and lasts approximately three hours.
The town has some amazing attractions, including the Cave of the Winds, an alpine theme park. The Cave of the Winds offers guided cave tours year-round, as well as fun activities like the Frontier Zipline and Terro-dactyl. It is also home to the Manitou Penny Arcade, an arcade museum that’s been in business since the 1930s. The arcade features one of the largest antique gaming setups in the state. It’s a great place to take the whole family for some fun.
The neighborhood of City Center is home to the largest population of people with Russian and Lebanese ancestry in America. Other ethnic groups in the area include Irish and English speakers. The City Center is also home to a community with a population of approximately three percent Japanese speakers, outnumbering 99.4% of people in the United States.
The city is also home to the Iron Mountain Open Space, a scenic area. This area supports single-family residential development. The area is accessible from Manitou Avenue. The extension of the open space would allow more homes in the community, while maintaining the existing trail system. However, there is a high potential for wildfire.
Visiting the Pikes Peak Cog Railway is another way to explore the region. The Cog Railway offers scenic rides to the top of the mountain and includes a summit house recently renovated.
